What is Sunekos®?

Sunekos® is a regenerative injectable skin treatment that has been developed to improve skin quality by supporting the skin's natural production of collagen and elastin.

It contains a patented combination of low molecular weight hyaluronic acid together with six amino acids that are naturally involved in the production of collagen and elastin.

Because the treatment works by supporting your skin's own biological processes rather than physically filling wrinkles or replacing lost volume, the aim is not to make you look like someone else, but to help your skin function more like healthier, younger skin. producing a fresher appearance without altering your natural facial features.

It can be used on the face, neck, décolletage and hands, and is particularly well suited to delicate areas such as the under eyes where improving skin quality is often more important than restoring volume.

How does Sunekos® work?

Collagen and elastin are two of the most important proteins within healthy skin. Collagen provides strength and support, while elastin allows the skin to stretch and return to its original position.

As we age, collagen and elastin production slows, the skin becomes less able to retain moisture, and its natural repair processes become less efficient. Over time, this can lead to fine lines, reduced elasticity, crepey skin and an overall loss of skin quality.

Fibroblasts are the specialised cells responsible for producing these proteins. Like all cells within the body, fibroblasts require the right environment and nutrients to function efficiently: a strong extracellular matrix. This is the supportive framework that surrounds skin cells and gives the skin its strength, elasticity and structure.

Sunekos® has been developed to support regeneration of this extracellular matrix, with the aim of improving skin hydration, elasticity and overall skin quality over a series of treatments.

Sunekos® combines hyaluronic acid with a carefully balanced blend of amino acids that are involved in collagen synthesis. The hyaluronic acid helps to maintain hydration within the skin, while the amino acids provide key building blocks that support fibroblast activity and the production of new collagen and elastin.

The under-eye area is one of the most popular treatment areas for Sunekos®. As the skin beneath the eyes is naturally thinner than elsewhere on the face, age-related changes often become noticeable here first. Rather than filling this delicate area, Sunekos® aims to improve the quality of the skin itself, making it a useful option for carefully selected patients with thin, crepey under-eye skin.

How is Sunekos® different to dermal fillers?

Although both are injectable treatments, Sunekos® and dermal fillers have very different purposes.

Dermal fillers are designed to restore volume, improve facial proportions and provide structural support to areas that have changed as a result of ageing. Results are usually seen immediately because the product physically replaces lost volume beneath the skin.

Sunekos® works in a different way. Rather than adding volume, it aims to improve the quality of the skin by supporting collagen and elastin production. Improvements develop gradually as the skin's natural regenerative processes take place.

For patients whose primary concern is skin quality, elasticity or crepey skin, Sunekos® may be more appropriate than filler. Equally, for patients who have significant age-related volume loss, dermal fillers may provide a more suitable solution.

These treatments are not alternatives in every situation, and many patients benefit from combining both as part of an individualised treatment plan.

How is Sunekos® different to polynucleotides?

Both Sunekos® and polynucleotides are regenerative injectable treatments, meaning they aim to improve the health of the skin rather than simply masking signs of ageing. However, they work through different biological pathways.

Sunekos® combines hyaluronic acid with a specific blend of amino acids to support fibroblast activity and encourage collagen and elastin production.

Polynucleotides are fragments of purified DNA that act primarily by supporting tissue repair, reducing inflammation and encouraging cellular regeneration within the skin.

Both treatments can improve skin quality, but one may be more suitable than the other depending on the skin concern being treated, the treatment area and your individual goals.

It is also possible to combine these treatments as part of a wider regenerative treatment plan where appropriate.

During your consultation, we will discuss the advantages and limitations of each option and decide which approach is most appropriate for you.

How soon can I see the results of Sunekos® treatment?

Unlike treatments that produce an immediate change by restoring volume, the effects of Sunekos® develop gradually.

Some patients notice that their skin feels more hydrated within the first few weeks, however improvements in collagen and elastin production take time.

Results are usually seen progressively throughout the treatment course and continue to develop in the weeks following your final appointment.

As with any regenerative treatment, the extent of improvement varies between individuals and depends on factors including age, lifestyle, sun exposure, smoking, skincare and your skin's natural ability to regenerate.

How many Sunekos® treatment sessions are required?

Sunekos® is designed to be performed as a course of treatment. The number of treatments required varies based on individual skin concerns and goals.

Whilst individual treatment plans vary, most patients require an initial course of three or four treatments performed approximately 10–14 days apart.

Following completion of the initial course, maintenance treatments are usually recommended every four to six months. The exact interval varies depending on factors such as your age, skin quality, lifestyle and long-term treatment goals.

Your treatment plan will always be tailored to your individual needs following assessment.

Can Sunekos® be combined with other aesthetic treatments?

Yes. In fact, many patients achieve the best results when regenerative treatments are incorporated into a wider treatment plan.

Depending on your aesthetic concerns, Sunekos® may be performed alongside treatments such as medical-grade skincare, microneedling, chemical peels, Morpheus8, polynucleotides, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers.

Your treatment plan will always be tailored to your individual skin, goals and lifestyle.

Am I a candidate for Sunekos® treatment?

Sunekos® treatment is suitable for most skin types, but a consultation is necessary to determine personal suitability.

Sunekos® treatment is not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Sunekos® treatment may not be suitable for:

Patients with infection at the proposed treatment site.
Patients on blood thinning medication (e.g. aspirin, warfarin).
Patients taking over-the-counter medication that can thin the blood or increase bruising (Omega-3, Vitamin E, Cod liver oil, Garlic, St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo Biloba).
Patients with a suppressed immune system.
Patients with an autoimmune disease.
Patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product, or who have multiple confirmed allergies.

What are the possible side effects?

As with any injectable treatment, side effects can occur, although most are mild and temporary.

Common side effects are minimal and may include slight redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve within a few days.

Less commonly, infection, prolonged swelling or allergic reactions may occur. Although serious complications are uncommon, no medical procedure is completely without risk.

Is Sunekos® treatment painful?

Most patients describe the treatment as very manageable and they are generally well tolerated.

Some areas of the face are naturally more sensitive than others, particularly around the eyes, however any discomfort is usually brief.

If you are concerned about discomfort, a topical anaesthetic cream can be applied before treatment to enhance comfort.

What is the recovery time after Sunekos® treatment?

The recovery period is typically short.

Immediately after treatment you may notice small raised bumps at the injection sites, together with mild redness or swelling. These are an expected part of the treatment and usually settle within 24–48 hours.

Some patients also experience mild bruising, particularly in areas where the skin is thinner, such as beneath the eyes.

Most people feel comfortable returning to work and normal daily activities straight afterwards, although you may prefer to schedule treatment a few days before an important social event if bruising would be difficult to conceal.

Advice prior to Sunekos® treatment

For seven days prior to treatment, avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medication such as aspirin, or ibuprofen-based medications, Omega-3, Vitamin E, Garlic, St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo Biloba. If you are prescribed a blood thinning medication such as aspirin or an anticoagulant by your doctor for a cardiovascular condition, then please check with your doctor prior to stopping the medication.
For 24 hours prior to treatment, do not drink alcohol to avoid extra bruising.
On the day of treatment, arrive to the clinic with a clean face.

What to expect on the day of Sunekos® treatment

Dr Lauren will go through what your aims are for treatment and will explain to you what is appropriate and achievable. A treatment plan will be agreed upon prior to treatment.
You will fill in a medical assessment questionnaire and complete a written consent form.
Pre-treatment photographs will be taken for your medical records.
Any make-up will be removed and the skin will be cleaned with chlorhexidine solution.
Sunekos® solution is injected into the targeted areas using a fine needle. Numbing cream may be applied to the area if required.
Post-procedure cream will be applied to the treated area following treatment.
You will be given a post-treatment advice sheet.
Dr Lauren will let you know if any further treatments or follow-up is required.

Sunekos® treatment aftercare instructions

Avoid touching the treated area unnecessarily for the rest of the day.
Avoid applying make-up until the following day where possible.
Avoid strenuous exercise first 24 hours or hot tubs.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after your treatment.
Refrain from using harsh skincare products for a few days.
Always wear a broad spectrum, high factor (30 or above) SPF, and avoid direct sun exposure.
Bruising can be helped by taking oral bromelain (pineapple extract) and oral arnica, or by applying arnica cream.
If you experience increasing pain, significant swelling, spreading redness or any symptoms that concern you following treatment, you should contact the clinic promptly for advice.
