Winfrey was raised with a preacher in the house and she learned to talk, read, and write at an early age, although she eventually became an avid reader of romance novels. Her parents divorced when she was 13, and she was raised by her mother, a single parent. She attended Interlochen Center for the Arts, where she was discovered by The Three Dads, who were recording artists that belonged to the doo-wop group The Moonglows. Winfrey became the lead singer for the group and started acting in television shows while singing in the band. When she was 15, Winfrey had a role in a television movie.
